Cashmere
The Material
Cashmere is one of the world’s finest natural fibers. It comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, which naturally protects them from the severe cold of the Mongolian winter. At Gurvan Sor, we work with premium Mongolian cashmere, valued for its exceptional softness, lightness and warmth. The fine undercoat is carefully processed into yarn and transformed into knitwear in our own production in Mongolia. The quality of cashmere is determined by several characteristics — including fiber fineness, length, yarn construction and the way the fiber is processed. Understanding these qualities helps explain what makes exceptional cashmere feel and perform differently.
GAUGE
Gauge (GG) refers to the number of stitches knitted per inch and is used to describe the density of knitted fabric. In general, the higher the gauge, the finer and lighter the knit.
Our cashmere knitwear is produced in 7GG, 12GG and 14GG, allowing us to create different weights, textures and levels of warmth.
MICRONS
Microns measure the diameter of an individual cashmere fiber. The finer the fiber, the softer and more delicate it feels against the skin. Fine cashmere typically falls within the range of approximately 14–19 microns.
Our cashmere fibers measure between 15 and 17 microns, reflecting the fine quality of the material we work with.
FIBER LENGTH
Fiber length is measured when the fiber is in a relaxed state. Fine cashmere fibers can range from approximately 28 to 40 mm, with longer fibers generally contributing to greater durability and reduced pilling.
Our latest laboratory test recorded a fiber length of 39.8 mm.
